Paid Annual Leave
We are currently involved in collective bargaining with Saiei School to resolve a member problem regarding for paid annual leave and the right to determine the member’s own own resignation date. Being able to to choose your own days to take paid annual leave is guaranteed by the Labour Standards Law.
Other Issues at Saiei
Threat of Non-Renewal
Saiei teachers, especially non-native teachers, have reported to the union that managers often threaten them with contract non-renewal.
Management Harassment
Management harassment is widespread at Saiei. The contract usually comes with an end of contract bonus, which is contingent upon compliance with the work rules. They are particularly tenacious about withdrawing the bonus at the first opportunity, in particular for lateness. Other forms of management harassment include, forcing people with non-native sounding names to change them (this is sadly an unfortunate practice in the Eikaiwa industry), and a steady stream of nitpicky criticism about lessons, student complaints (even from children), and office work (no talking while folding fliers is one common criticisms to receive).
Proper Insurance Enrollment
There is no Unemployment Insurance enrollment, nor is there Shakai Hoken enrollment at Saiei School. Update: Saiei was ordered to back enroll a union member in Shakai Hoken by the Japan Pension Office in early 2011.
Weekend Work
There is a very unpopular weekend English camp that teachers are responsible for twice a year.
